Say what you want about Devolver Digital but, damn it, they’ve got style. This year marks Devolver’s first official E3 press conference which was definitely not business as usual. Let me put it this way, a volunteer has his arm violently ripped off on stage. The bizarre 15 minute conference is jammed with parodies of E3 tropes and downright absurd, over the top humour, making for a rollercoaster experience and arguably one of the stand-out points of this year’s showings.
Ruiner is an isometric cyberpunk shooter where you frantically butcher enemies with an imaginative array of weaponry including a katana, a railgun and an ultrasonic gun reminiscent of District 9, to name just a few. With only “2017” as a release date, who knows when we’ll see this game on shelves (or indeed Steam libraries), regardless, this is one to watch out for.
Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour is the first non-VR Serious Sam game since 2013 and departs from the series’ signature FPS genre, opting for a top down perspective and a throwback style. Touting 4-player co-op, a level up perk system, 12 player death match and full mod support, this looks to be a bona fide entry to the Serious Sam franchise. You’ll be able to get your hands on this gem through Steam early access “summer 2017”.
But there were more Devolver games present at E3 beyond the conference’s paltry offering.
Absolver, shown at E3 last year, made an appearance and looks as solid as ever. Absolver is a deep melee combat game with different fighting styles and stances. The tense one-on-one combat requires you to be aware of each movement your opponent makes as the upper hand can change over a single blow in these dance-like battles. Dark Souls fans are sure to love Absolver’s PvP action and you can expect the game to release this August.
The Swords of Ditto was announced just before E3 and made an appearance in person. This Adventure Time looking action RPG boasts a methodically generated world and dungeons, rogue-like elements, local co-op and best of all, revival hugs. You play a new hero every time you venture out to do battle with Mormo’s evil hordes, leaving your mark every generation and leading to a cumulative campaign against the darkness. The Swords of Ditto is slated for release in 2018.
Minit is a quirky little adventure game that can only be played 60 seconds at a time. Every item you acquire and change you make to the world remains across plays but your poor little character dies every single minute. This mechanic forces you to throw caution to the wind and dive into the world to uncover its secrets, leading to a lot of improvisation. With such a unique concept this could be the hidden gem of this E3, unfortunately there’s no release date as of yet.
